Newport Beach Gas Installation Service: Outdoor-Living Runs and Harbor Feed Lines
By William "Jay" Horsky Jr., Owner, Professional Plumbing, Inc. · Published June 25, 2026 · Updated June 25, 2026
Newport Beach gas installation service runs from the meter to each appliance, and here it splits between two kinds of work: outdoor-living runs for the fire pits, built-in BBQs, patio heaters, and standby generators these homes are known for, and replacing the aging steel feed lines on the older harbor properties. We run and replace gas lines, locate and repair leaks, fit earthquake shut-off valves, and pressure-test everything before it goes back in service.
If you smell gas
Whether it is an indoor line or an outdoor run, a rotten-egg smell is a leak until proven otherwise. Leave the area without sparking a switch or a flame and call SoCalGas or 911 from outside. We then find the leak, repair it, and pressure-test the system.
Two gas jobs by the harbor
- Newport Beach gas installation service tends to fall into two camps: feeding the outdoor-living features these homes love, from fire pits and built-in BBQs to patio heaters and backup generators, and renewing the tired steel that feeds older harbor properties.
- When a fire pit barely flickers, the culprit is almost always a starved line stretched a long way, so we load-calculate, resize the run, and use non-corroding polyethylene for any buried stretch near the salt.
- Up to the meter is SoCalGas territory; the piping, shut-offs, seismic valve, and every appliance hookup beyond it sit with the homeowner.
- Any new or replaced gas pipe carries a permit and a required pressure test, and a seismic shut-off valve earns its place on anything from a harbor cottage to a hillside estate.
What gas installation service covers in Newport Beach
It is everything on your side of the gas meter. SoCalGas owns the line up to the meter; beyond it, the piping in your walls and yard, the shut-off valves, the earthquake valve, and each appliance connection belong to you (SoCalGas). The gas jobs we see most are outdoor-living runs for fire pits and generators, aging steel feed lines from the meter to older harbor homes, earthquake shut-off valves, and new lines for tankless water heaters.
Outdoor-living gas runs on the water
Newport homes lean into the outdoors, and a fire pit on the patio, a built-in BBQ by the dock, or a standby generator each needs its own properly sized gas run, often a long one far from the meter. We add up the demand with a load calculation, size the line so the feature performs, set a dedicated shut-off, and protect any buried run near the salt and damp with non-corroding polyethylene. A fire pit that barely flickers is almost always an undersized line.
| Newport gas job | The consideration | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Fire pit or built-in BBQ | A long run far from the meter | Load-calculate, size the line, add a shut-off |
| Standby generator | Heavy draw the moment it starts | Size the line and check the meter capacity |
| Older harbor feed line | Salt and damp corrode the buried steel | Replace with polyethylene, then pressure-test |
| Any outdoor buried run | Coastal corrosion over time | Use non-corroding pipe and a tracer wire |
Earthquake shut-off valves in Newport Beach
An earthquake shut-off valve at the meter closes the gas automatically during strong shaking, which protects the home from a gas-fed fire after a quake. It is worth having on any Orange County home, harbor cottage or hillside estate, and we install and test it to code.
Permits and pressure tests on every Newport gas job
New and replaced gas piping is permitted and must pass a pressure test. We pull the permit and run that test on every qualifying job, whether it is a long outdoor-kitchen run or a harbor feed-line replacement, so the system is proven tight before the gas comes back. If you have a quote for an outdoor-living gas project and want a second read, our free second opinion is there. Call or ask for details.
By the numbers. Since 1985, Professional Plumbing has completed more than 36,900 plumbing jobs across Orange County, and Newport Beach has been on that route from the start.
A Newport Beach home: a new line from the meter to the house
At a Newport Beach home, the feed line from the meter into the house had to be replaced. We dug from the meter, under the front sidewalk, and around a large tree up to the existing gas connection. From there, the old feed came out and we connected at the meter with a transition fitting to PE, ran new 1-inch PE through the trench with a tracer wire, and brought it up at the house with a new ball-valve shut-off. Once it was tight, the gas went back on, and we tested for leaks, tagged both ends of the new line, backfilled, put the grass back, and relit the pilot at the water heater.
Newport Beach gas installation FAQ
Can you run gas for a fire pit or BBQ at my Newport Beach home?
We run gas for a fire pit or BBQ at your Newport Beach home, and outdoor-living runs are some of our most common Newport work. A fire pit, built-in BBQ, or patio heater often sits a long way from the meter, so we load-calculate, size the line for the demand, set a shut-off, and pressure-test it.
Why does my fire pit have such a weak flame?
A weak flame on your fire pit is almost always an undersized gas line over a long run. We check the demand against the line size and upsize it so the feature performs the way it should.
Do older harbor homes need their gas feed line replaced?
Older harbor homes often do need their gas feed line replaced. Salt and damp ground near the water corrode the buried steel feed from the meter to the house. We replace it with polyethylene, which resists that corrosion, and pressure-test the new run.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor gas line in Newport Beach?
You do need a permit for an outdoor gas line in Newport Beach. New gas piping is permitted and must pass a pressure test. We handle the permit and the test on every qualifying job.
Will a standby generator need a bigger gas line or meter?
A standby generator may need a bigger gas line or meter, possibly both. A generator draws heavily on startup, so we run a load calculation and, if the meter cannot supply it along with everything else, coordinate the upgrade with the utility.

What Newport Beach customers say
Real reviews from our Newport Beach Google Business Profile.
★★★★★
“I had a rotted pipe in the drain line in my garage. Professional Plumbing was the second company I called. I was not comfortable with the first company. I have an old house and had concerns with the age of my pipes. Nick listened to my concerns and was able to fix the problem. The work was done in a professional manner and the cost was reasonable. I will definitely call Professional Plumbing first next time!”
